About BASIC²:
BASIC² is an exhibition themed around “basic research” in artistic practice.
The term basic research—widely used in the sciences—is the conceptual counterpart to applied research. While applied research is often driven by the needs of society or collective demands, aiming at solving concrete problems, basic research seeks simply to illuminate the unknown or to pursue theory itself. It proceeds by setting aside the question, “What is this good for?” and is instead propelled by intellectual curiosity and a desire for exploration.
Even though it may seem “useless,” it is precisely basic research that opens up new frontiers of knowledge, forming the foundation upon which applied research can later develop. In this sense, “basic” does not mean “elementary” or “simple.” Rather, it involves advancing through darkness with only a small lantern—one’s own hypotheses and ideas—to rely on: a demanding, yet deeply joyful pursuit.
Today, art is often expected to respond to social needs, to serve roles or demonstrate benefits across various contexts. Yet, I believe the true nature of art may be closer to that of basic research in science. Motivated by this idea, I initiated this exhibition as an environment where each artist can pursue their practice as it is—without justification, purpose, or imposed direction.— TYM344

『BASIC²』について：
芸術実践における基礎研究をテーマとした展覧会です。「基礎研究（Basic Research）」とは、特に科学の世界で一般に使用される用語で、「応用研究（Applied research）」の対概念です。応用研究が主に社会や集団の要請に基づき具体的な問題・課題の解決を目指すような実用的な目的を持つものであるのに対して、基礎研究は単に未解明の事象を解き明かそうとしたり理論そのものを突き詰めていくものです。そのため基礎研究は「それがなんの役に立つのか？」という観点や批判はいったん脇において進めていくものであり、その原動力は専ら自らの知的好奇心、探究心です。なんの役に立たないと言っても、基礎研究が知のフロンティアを開拓してくれるからこそ、それに基づいて応用研究も発展することができます。その意味で、基礎研究を「基礎」と呼ぶのであって、そこには「入門的な」とか「簡単な」というような意味はまったくありません。むしろ、実用性（何かの役に立つ）という他者から理解を得やすい「出口」も無く、自らが立てた仮説や理念といった小さなランタンだけを頼りに真っ暗闇の中をさまよいながら進んでいく、大変に困難な、かつ楽しいものです。
芸術も、現在では社会の様々な場面でその役割や効能や意義がうたわれていますが、芸術の、そもそもの本当の姿は、まさに科学の世界における基礎研究と同じではないかと思うのです。そういった理念にもとづく環境をつくってみたいと思い、あくまでひとりひとりの芸術実践をそのまま行える場として、この展覧会をはじめることにしました。TYM344
